Rockingham - Race 2 Report - 23/9/12

Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal take a 1-2 victory for Honda Yuasa Racing Team in the 2nd race from Rockingham. Jason Plato takes 3rd place in the treacherous conditions.

Following the cool but dry conditions earlier in the day, race 2 started in the rain with Jason Plato on pole following his dominant victory in race 1. Andrew Jordan joined Plato on the front row of the grid with Gordon Shedden and Mat Jackson on row two.

Rob Collard got a good start in his eBay Motors BMW 320si as did Andrew Jordan in the Pirtek Racing Honda Civic as they passed the MG KX Momentum Racing MG6 of pole-sitter Jason Plato who lost 2 places. Also on the first lap, Gordon Shedden passed Jason Plato to take 3rd place, closely followed by Rob Collard who took 4th. After a frantic first lap, Andrew Jordan was in the lead with Gordon Shedden 2nd, Rob Collard 3rd and Jason Plato 4th.

The Safety Car was briefly deployed whist marshals recovered Andy Neate's MG6. Racing resumed and Andrew Jordan dropped several places when he lost control of his Civic in the treacherous conditions allowing Gordon Shedden to take over the lead followed by Jason Plato who had passed Rob Collard.

At the half-way point, Honda Yuasa Racing team-mates Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal were in the lead with Jason Plato 3rd and Mat Jackson 4th. Running mid-field, Rob Collard was having some exciting battles as he made up several places however he later spun in the slippery conditions and lost the places he had previously gained.

As the race settled down, the Honda Yuasa Racing team-mates briefly swapped places to allow Matt Neal to gain an extra championship point for leading the race however at the chequered flag it was victory for Gordon Shedden with Matt Neal 2nd and Jason Plato 3rd. Mat Jackson finished 4th for Redstone Racing with the Dynojet Toyota Avensis of Frank Wrathall 5th and Aron Smith 6th for Redstone Racing.

The reverse grid system for the final race of the day will see Adam Morgan start from pole position alongside Ollie Jackson with Andrew Jordan and Aron Smith on the second row of the grid. Matt Neal still heads the championship table but Gordon Shedden is now only a single point behind, having taken his 7th race victory of the 2012 season.
