Like father like son - history made at Brands Hatch

By MJP Media | 8 April 2015

History was made at Brands Hatch last weekend by Rob and Ricky Collard as it was the first time a father and son had both won races on the same TOCA programme.

Sunday at Brands Hatch in Kent saw history being made as for the first time ever a father and son both had wins on the same TOCA programme. Father and son Rob and Ricky Collard enjoyed the limelight as they both took the top step of the podium in their respective series: Rob in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship and Ricky in the MSA Formula Championship.

That Ricky has become a successful racer should surprise nobody. As well as being the son of BTCC racer Rob Collard, he is also grandson of British Hot Rod Champion Mick Duffy Collard. At the age of 18 he already has a history of winning under his belt, being a former karting champion in 2006 and taking 5 class wins in the 2014 MSA Formula Ford championship. His career was in doubt in 2013 after he suffered a very serious kart crash in Italy which left him with multiple injuries. To come back from that so soon is a testament to the determination which makes champions.

Ricky took his maiden single seater outright win in the second MSA Formula Championship race at Brands Hatch for Team TRS Arden. He survived two safety car interventions to take victory after he made a flying start from fourth on the grid and took the lead away from pole-sitter James Pull at Druids. He maintained his advantage to take the win by almost half a second after what is only one season in the series.

Father Rob followed up that celebration an hour later with an immaculate victory in the first of the three Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship races. Starting 5th on the grid, Rob was able to get up to second off the line before passing team-mate Andy Priaulx for the lead and the win. Rob is an ever faithful in the BTCC in recent years and has been tremendously loyal to the WSR racing team. Despite having to play second fiddle to Colin Turkington last year in the team, there has never been any doubt about Rob's winning credentials in the series having contested 371 races, with 9 wins and 40 podium finishes since his first race in the series at Oulton Park 15 years ago.

Will Ricky join Rob in the British Touring Car Championship?

Rob and Ricky are easily identifiable in the paddock as they are both that rare breed of driver who has a big smile and time for the supporters and media, even in adversity. Both are fast, both are determined and both know how to win. The big question now is will be see them both in a BTCC car any time soon - and if we do, who will establish the bragging rights? It's a big well done to both of them we hope to see the day they go head to head in similar machinery.
