With only one more meeting on the 2012 calendar, the three races from Silverstone tomorrow will be critical for the British Touring Car Championship title contenders. Following rain early in the morning, the first free practice session took place on a very wet track, although the sun was shining on the Northamptonshire circuit.

Jason Plato set the fastest time in the first free practice session in his MG KX Momentum Racing MG6 with Mat Jackson 2nd fastest in the Redstone Racing Ford Focus. Frank Wrathall was 3rd fastest in the Dynojet Toyota Avensis with Aron Smith 4th for Redstone Racing. Rob Collard and Tom Onslow-Cole were 5th and 6th fastest for eBay Motors. Andrew Jordan and Matt Neal were the fastest of the Honda Civics in 7th and 8th.

By the start of the second free practice session, the track had dried out and the lap times reflected the improved conditions. Once again, Jason Plato looked like topping the time sheets, however Daniel Welch had other ideas and put in a blistering lap towards the end of the session, pushing the former BTCC champion down into 2nd place. Team-mates Aron Smith and Mat Jackson were 3rd and 4th fastest for Redstone Racing with Dave Newsham 5th for Team ES Racing.com and Tom Onslow-Cole 6th for eBay Motors.

As many people predicted, the Honda Civics struggled around the Silverstone National circuit with Howard Fuller being the fastest for Team HARD. in 10th place. Defending BTCC champion Matt Neal ended the session 12th fastest whist still suffering from a broken hand he sustained several weeks ago. Gordon Shedden was 15th fastest and will have his work cut out if he is to maintain his position as the current championship leader.

With 17 cars posting times within 1 second of Daniel Welch's fastest time, the scene is set for an exciting qualifying session later this afternoon.
